What Happens When We Die?
King James Bible
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.
John 11:25
A fellow at New York's Weill Cornell Medical Center, Dr. Sam Parnia is one of the world's leading experts on the scientific study of death.
Last week, Parnia and his colleagues at the Human Consciousness Project announced their first major undertaking: a 3-year exploration of the biology behind "out-of-body" experiences.
The study, known as AWARE (AWAreness during REsuscitation), involves the collaboration of 25 major medical centers through Europe, Canada and the U.S., and will examine some 1,500 survivors of cardiac arrest.
TIME spoke with Parnia about the project's origins, its skeptics, and the difference between the mind and the brain.
And
the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into
his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
Then
we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in
the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with
the Lord.
