Around The Net

"The Netalyzr research project from the ICSI networking group has discovered that on a number of US ISPs' networks, search traffic for Bing, Yahoo! and sometimes Google is being redirected to proxy servers operated by a company called Paxfire. In addition to posing a grave privacy problem, this server impersonation is being used to redirect certain searches away from the user's chosen search engine and to affiliate marketing programs instead. Further analysis is available in a post at the EFF."

"Notorious spam king Sanford Wallace is facing federal fraud charges for allegedly breaking into the Facebook accounts of 500,000 victims in 2008 and 2009 and using the stolen credentials to post 27 million spam messages. The charges are outlined in an indictment, filed July 6 but made public Thursday after Wallace turned himself in to federal authorities. If convicted, Wallace could get more than 16 years in prison."

"On several recent Wednesdays, Russian language social networking site Vkontakte has been blocked by the government of Belarus. The blocks are partly to prevent the organization of 'Silent Protests,' in which citizens gather in city squares, and clap in protest against president Alexander Lukashenko. The government has designated the people involved as "social network revolutionaries" and charged many with disorderly conduct. One VKontakte user, Mikhail Karatkevich, is to be put on trial August 10 for 'organizing a mass rally' after he posted a meeting notice onto his page. According to Charter 97, the regime has even set up fake proxy servers to capture the unwitting; Tor is the suggested solution."

"Another day, yet another data security failure. Two companies have been found in breach of the Data Protection Act after tens of thousands of tenants' details were left at a London pub, alongside 800 records with bank account details. A contractor who had stored data from two different companies on an unencrypted USB drive was responsible. We've all lost things on a night out, but rarely is it other people's banking information. The two firms involved have been told to get a grip on their security procedures, but they escaped a fine from the ICO."

The massive 8.8 earthquake in Chile was the fifth largest ever recorded by seismographs. It shrunk our day by a whole 1.26 microseconds. And researchers have now determined that the entire city of Concepcion (the closest urban area to the quake’s epicenter) moved 10 feet to the west as a result of it.

Study: Healthy eating is privilege of the rich

Alexandria Kraft was stunned when a teacher at the private Calvary Christian School in Sacramento, California, confronted her for talking about her fondness for a girl on the social networking site. Alexandria said: ‘The teacher said, “Take your books and leave.” I got kicked out.’ The teacher allegedly told the student ‘that’s not accepted here’ and ordered her to go home. Speaking about her sexuality, Alexandria said: ‘I’ve always been curious about it but I never really had a girlfriend.’ On the day Alexandria was expelled, her mother Catina Ayala received a phone call from the school.
.
She said they asked her if she knew that her daughter was gay. Mrs Ayala said she was baffled by the school administration’s response. She said: ‘For her, saying what she is, for them acting the way they did is totally discrimination.’ She added that school officials also asked if she knew of any other kids at the school that are bisexual. Calvary Christian School is part of the Calvary Evangelical Center, a conservative Christian church. According to Mrs Ayala, school administrators did not say their policy prohibited homosexual students, but instead it relied on the Bible as their final authority. Mrs Ayala said she knows ‘for a fact’ that there are other gay students at the school. ‘If they are going to kick my daughter out, they should kick everybody else out that is bi,’ she said. The California Supreme Court ruled in 2009 that private schools do not have to follow California’s civil rights laws.
