The story begins on September 1st, 1983, when Soviet jet interceptors shot down a Korean Air Lines civilian airliner after the aircraft crossed into Soviet airspace and then, for reasons still unknown, failed to respond to radio hails. 269 passengers and crew died, including US Congressman Lawrence McDonald. Ronald Reagan called it "barbarism", "inhuman brutality", "a crime against humanity that must never be forgotten". Note that this was already a very, very poor time for US/USSR relations. Andropov, the ailing Soviet leader, was half-convinced the US was planning a first strike. The KGB sent a flash message to its operatives warning them to prepare for possible nuclear war...

Quench not-the Spirit being a holy fire: "where the Spirit is, He burns" [Bengel]
To quench is to extinguish or put out a fire. God implies the holy spirit in us is as a fire and should not be dampened.
Matthew 3:11:I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Hebrews 12:29:For our God is a consuming fire.

It is interesting to note that on the day of Pentecost the apostles saw a vision of "tongues as of fire." They then manifested forth the new spirit within by speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:4).

We have been given so much ability to exercise the power of God. Our freedom of will determines how much of that power we will bring forth.

We have the powerful Word of God at our disposal as well as the spirit of God within us. People hear a lot of words spoken but rarely do they see the genuine power of God unless a believer is manifesting it. God wants us to use it not quench it.
I Corinthians 2:4 and 5:And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

The connection in which the exhortation, "Quench not the Spirit" occurs, shows to what it refers. The next sentence is, "Despise not prophesyings." It has to do with the gifts of the Spirit and their exercise in the holy liberty and power of the Spirit.

"Quench not the Spirit" would go further, and warns us against any attempt to shut out, or impose limits on the free action of the Holy Spirit in the gifts He has entrusted to the saints. The word quench means to suppress or stifle. "Quench not"--as if it were a candle flame,--a fire, which might be extinguished.

Do not throw water on yourself from doing the same thing by resisting the move of the Spirit and smothering it out.

The Pharisees restrict the flow of spiritual experiences until religion becomes a purely intellectual and theological exercise, and the Spirit is quenched. Pharisaism was heretical in spite of its theological correctness.The Pharisee's real problem was that they drastically overvalued the role of theology in spiritual life and made theological correctness the chief religious virtue. They had a man~given confidence in their theology. Their faith became intellectualized. Their center of faith moved from the heart to the head. A sign of this was the way that they bombarded Jesus with theological questions.

The Pharisee's self~evaluation was that they were on the forefront of what God was doing for Israel. Jesus judgement of them was different:

Although they believed themselves to be the protectors of orthodoxy, the Pharisees were really the opponents of the Holy Spirit. All Pharisaism contains tragic elements of missed opportunities.They stood in the way of the person of the Holy Spirit at work.
They are "witch hunters" who like to point out errors and win their case.

On the other hand, well meaning workers in ministry want to help individuals from being presumptuous. When Christians begin to appropriate specific promises in Scripture as being applicable to themselves and nothing happens they can become very confused and disillusioned. Yes the Holy Spirit can and does speak to individuals, and it is often through Scripture. But one must use discernment, is it really the voice of God or is it presumption?

We want to encourage and to inspire others to move out in the power of the Holy Spirit while helping them to avoid presumption. A very fine line, if we are not careful we could 'throw the baby out with the bath water.'

Many people were upset with Jesus because He claimed to know the mind and heart of God, to speak directly for God, to reveal God's mind and heart towards an individual or group of individuals. Therefore they threw Him out with the bathwater! They missed Jesus Christ, Almighty God the Master Creator because of their resistance to what He was and what He was saying. They clung tightly to their orthodoxy and their drastically overvalued theology and therefore they missed Jesus for who He truly is.

Barbara Dixon is grateful to the Lord that she is alive today. One year ago, she was told that she had one month to live. Today she can tell the amazing story of her instant healing.

In December of 1970, Barbara had surgery for a back injury, four years later, in 1974, her back still was not healing properly and had not improved. This caused her doctor to send her to a neurologist. The neurologist discovered that Barbara had myasthenia gravis, a neuro-muscular disease, which is incurable and fatal. The disease causes the muscles of the body to collapse and deteriorate.

The very same day that Barbara was healed, June 14, 1974, her doctor told her she had one month to live. That night, Barbara came to Shekinah Fellowship's miracle healing service in San Diego CA. She could barely walk into the service. Her facial muscles had fallen and were separated. Her vision was double and blurry. Her voice almost gone. Her head hung because she had no strength in her neck. Barbara puts it, "I was a mess!"

During the healing service, Brant said that a muscle disease was being healed. Barbara felt the Lord touch her, but could not tell no physical diffrence right then. About thirty minutes after Barbara left the service, her friend Shirley, began to see a change in Barbara.

Within two hours after the service, Barbara's facial muscles had lifted, her strength had returned and she was literally running up and down the street of her neighborhood, completely healed! Her doctor was amazed at the healing. He's never seen anything like it.

Barbara also received a complete spiritual renewal. She said, "Of all that God has done, the personal grace and the personal faithfulness of Christ brings me on my knees every day. I've never found words to express what is in my soul."

What began as another exhilarating manta ray night dive off Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on an August evening in 2010, quickly turned into the theft of the century. Cameraman Travis Matteson was capturing footage for the scuba diving travel television show “Into the Drink” … Suddenly, one of the manta’s giant wings hooked his light system, and darted off with the nearly $10,000 worth of photo gear. Underwater videographer Johnny Reidt caught the entire theft on camera, and the manta, carrying the stolen photo rig, captured some amazing footage of the nighttime reef.

Imagine a pill that you could take every day that would extend your life by years and keep you healthy for longer. You’d probably pay a lot for such a pill. Vladimir Skulachev looks like he is getting close to selling it to you. The global media has been a flutter with Skulachev’s recent announcement that he has developed a ‘cure for aging’. The Russian biochemist is the head of the Bioenergetics Department at Moscow State University and has been working on the problem of aging for 40 years. His cure is an anti-oxidant that he claims extends median lifespan and (if you’ll believe it) removed a cataract from his eye. We’ve seen some extraordinary claims in the last few years but a single substance that ‘cures aging’ seems almost impossible. Watch the video below to see Skulachev partially explain his work. It will be amazing if this development turns out to be even close to true.

First off, we should probably address whether or not this is a hoax. As far as I can tell, it is not. Skulachev has a long history of publications, many of which are heavily cited by other scientists. He holds a real position at a well respected university. He came up with, or at least coined, the Programmed-Aging Theory, which proposes that aging developed because it has evolutionary advantages. He’s also garnered the respect of noted biochemist and Nobel Laureate Gunter Blobel, as you can see at 1:08 in the video.

Is God a filmmaker?

The fact is that if we want to create something truly great for God we can’t just rely on Him. As Charles Finney famously wrote: “We need to work like it all depends on us, and then pray like it all depends on God.” God wants to use us for His glory but we still have to be willing to sacrifice ourselves and our gifts to make it happen. Making movies is expensive and challenging. Making movies for God’s glory is still expensive and challenging. Rather than complain and debate those facts, we should be working to develop powerful, far-reaching stories, raise the funds needed to properly produce and release them and then actively support them when they come out.

The Sadducees, a religious group, who flourished during the ministry of Jesus, were the political aristocrats, and the wealthiest elements, among the Jewish society. They maintained undisputed control over local government as well as the Great Sanhedrin. Their wealth came, principally, from the commercial side of the temple services, which involved the sale of lambs and cattle for offering sacrifices, at large profits. It was Annas, their political boss, who, as a former high priest, had placed his hired agents within the Temple for those unholy purposes.

This group did not believe in the creed of future rewards and punishments; and they taught that there was no such thing as a resurrection. With them, all things ended at the grave. Hence their open animosity toward the Christ who had, on more than one occasion, actually brought the dead back to life! No credence was placed in Jesus' assurances that, after His death, He would arise on the third day. They scoffed at such a thing.

While the Sadducees were never very friendly with the opposing religious group, the Pharisees, the two were ever-ready to combine their miserable talents in any conspiracy to embarrass and humiliate the Christ- as well as the final plan to destroy Him! Enmity toward Jesus was the one, main thing which they had in common. All that Jesus was teaching, and all He preached, ran counter to the thoughts and creed and teachings of both the Sadducees and Pharisees.

We recall that, on one occasion, when the Pharisees failed to trap Jesus into stating that it was not lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, the Sadducees sent a group from their sect for the same purpose- to trap the Master. Here we find the Bible account of their efforts:

"Then came to Him a group of Sadducees, and asked Him: Master, Moses said, if a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were with us seven brothers; and having no issue, left his wife to his brother. Likewise, the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. At last the woman dies also. Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife shall she be of the seven, for they all had her?"

Jesus well knew that this group had ridiculed His teachings in respect to the resurrection, and that they were not in good faith in acting upon such a premise. Therefore, He said to them:

"Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying: I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not God of the dead, but of the living!"

And when the multitudes heard this, they were greatly astonished at His doctrine. But when the Pharisees heard that He had put the Sadducees to silence, they were no longer desirous of propounding their questions to Him.

"And no man was able to answer Him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask Him any more questions."

Failing completely in every attempt to trap the Christ, they determined to end His ministry through a scheme and conspiracy to "seek false witnesses that they might destroy Him."

The rasing of Lazarus back to life, from a four-day-old grave, and the chasing of the money-changers from the Temple of God, were the two outstanding acts of the Christ which made this particular group exceedingly angered with Him. Therefore, in a spirit of eagerness to retaliate, they happily joined forces with the Pharisees in the common cause of committing murder-murdering the innocent blood of Jesus! And it may be added, the leaders in that unholy conspiracy and cowardly alliance were the Sadducees...

Tammy Faye Was A Hope Broker

Tammy Faye was a hope broker. She is a hero and a role model for me. I can only dream that I could help as many people as she has with her (to quote the Charlotte Observer obituary) "can-do Christian cheer."

A lot of Christians made her life miserable and left her when she was down. But she seemed to move right past it. It was interesting to me that when she died her family contacted Larry King. He had an awful lot of respect for her and let her talk freely about anything she wanted to talk about.

I have to admit that at one time I almost became a Tammy Faye detractor myself, until it occurred to me that I WAS Tammy Faye. Male perhaps, but Tammy Faye nevertheless. It also occurred to me that it wouldn't be hard to imagine having someone like Tammy Faye as part of your own family. I'm willing to go out on a limb and say most families have someone like Tammy Faye in their extended circle. Somebody that speaks their mind, but embraces all people. Somebody that is brash but loves everybody and loves them all the same. Somebody that wears outrageous clothes, hairdos and styles. Somebody that loves to laugh and goes to the extremes. Somebody that loves life and lived it!

A few years ago I read an interview with Tammy's son Jamie (who goes by Jay,) who heads up a wild ministry to folks on the extreme edge. Jamie is on the edge himself (videos are not working). At the time his mom was involved in some pretty peculiar work for the former wife of one of television's best known evangelists. She was on the WB reality show "The Surreal Life" with Vanilla Ice and former adult porn star Ron Jeremy. Her son Jamie - who was embarrassed by his mom - told of trying to convince her that people were watching the show and laughing at her. She told him she didn't care, that she loved these people, that they were her friends, and that Jesus loved them and she wanted to be the one to tell them. Jamie Bakker said after listening to his mom explain it all to him she went from being an embarrassment to him to being his hero. That's when she became a hero to me as well.

Around the same time and after the release of the documentary "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" which chronicled her life, she became a sensation in the gay community. That raised my eyebrows, so I started to read about what her role was there. Turns out they were inviting her to preach! But mostly she just loved on them. She preached at AIDS events and became loved by gay men across the nation. I read one of her sermons to these gatherings and it could have just as easily come across Billy Graham's pulpit. She reinforced how much she loved these guys, how much Jesus loved them, how much God despised sin, and how she was pleased to give a kiss and a motherly pull on the cheek to everyone of them. You go girl! I cried after reading the accounts and asked God to help me love everybody as much as Tammy Faye did. Maybe someday I'll love people with the fervency Tammy Faye had for people. Maybe someday. Maybe.

Tammy Faye grew up in northern Michigan in a family of eight kids in a house without running water. Her and Jim were Assembly of God kids that met in Bible College and wanted to share the message of Jesus far and wide. They started out doing puppets, which they eventually did for a budding television program that would become known as the 700 Club. They started out small and grew huge.

It might be fair to say that success became their downfall, except that they didn't stay down. Both Tammy Faye and Jim bounced back with a love for people and a message of hope for the ordinary person.

I had the privilege of meeting Jim Bakker a few years ago right after he got out of jail and wrote a book called, "I Was Wrong." He was broken, sincere, kind, gentle and had all the time in the world for me. I was embarrassed, humiliated and felt a degree of self-scorn for not being a person that had the same outflow of love as he had. I wish I would have met Tammy Faye.
Tammy Faye was at one of the local casinos not too long ago making an appearance and signing her book. She did an interview with a local radio station, they loved it and said she was a blast, and the local newspaper made it sound like a not to be missed event. Lots of hugs, people thanking her, lots of tears, lots of encouragement, lots of talk about Jesus. People loved her and she loved people.

Tammy Faye was a hope broker. People with broken lives were drawn to her. Gay men listened as she spoke about sin. Larry King leaned over and listened to her every word over and over. After almost every Tammy Faye interview, he would say, "Amazing!" She was a hero to her son. A broken lady that loved Jesus and moved through every difficulty in her life, while she continued to try and draw people closer to God.

If at the end of your life the Charlotte Observer - which was harsh to the Bakkers at many junctures in their life - says of you that you carried a message of "can-do Christian cheer" than we'll be able to say that was a life well lived. You go sis! I love you and am proud to be your brother!!

P.S. I am so glad I didn't do post number 100 on the midnight release of the new Harry Potter book - which I originally planned to do. This is SO much more important than Harry Potter could ever hope to be!
