As a fulfilling of my mother in laws bucket list my wife went with her to France before cancer took my mother in laws life. I would get up early every morning and talk to my wife on Skype. It cost me nothing and I got to see her face on my computer screen. Way back in the early seventies I would call a friend in Sweden and talk with her for just a few minutes and the phone bill would be outrageous. The connection would be low quality and I had no visual. Skype is one of the modern marvels of my old age when I recall how expensive long distance calls were and how bad the connections were. Skype is crystal clear visuals and pristine audio.
"Skype made a name for itself by largely bypassing the infrastucture —
and the costs, and the regulations — of the legacy telecommunications
industry. But now the French telecom regulator wants to change that,
at least in France. At issue is not the service's VoIP offering, but
rather the Skype Out service that allows users to dial phones on
traditional networks. Regulators say that this service necessitates
that Skype face the same regulations as other telecoms."
