Soundtrack to the movie Robot Overlords - an all-British blockbuster starring Gillian Anderson (X-Files) and Sir Ben Kingsley.
In the low-budget British sci-fi adventure, Robot Overlords, alien automatons rule the streets and ordinary citizens are locked under curfew in their homes. Just by stepping outside, you risk being vaporised by a hulking Sentry, or picked off by a lethal Sniper.
Amid the ruins of civilisation, Sean Flynn (Callan McAuliffe) leads his group of young friends on a quest to join the resistance forces that are standing against the robot invaders.
Hot on their heels, however is their old teacher – now treacherous robot collaborator – Robin Smythe (Ben Kingsley) and his captive Kate (Gillian Anderson). Who will prevail? Man or machine?
‘It’s like The Goonies, but with robots blowing stuff up!’
The original story concept for Robot Overlords came to director and co-writer, Jon Wright, in a dream.
“I dreamed that I was playing cowboys and Indians with a little boy,” Wright recalled.
“A huge two-storey robot came marching up the street and swung its laser cannon arm towards him, and a voice boomed out, ‘Citizen, drop your weapon immediately!’ I assumed I was just recycling a movie that I’d already seen, but eventually, I came to the conclusion that maybe it was an original idea.”
After expanding the dream concept into a two-page treatment, Wright began developing a script with co-writer Mark Stay. “Jon and I are both big fans of those 1980s Amblin movies like E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and The Goonies,” said Stay. “But those films were always set in American suburbia – we wondered why nobody had ever set a film like that in the UK.”

The movie follows a group of teenagers several
years after Earth’s invasion by robots, the robots have confined the
human survivors to their homes for the last three years.
We start the story with no one actually knowing the intent of the Robots and why they are doing all of this.
There is only one clear message: Robots never lie.
But clearly they also lack any form of compassion, death sentences appearing to be the standard punishment for even minor infractions!
The group are lead by Sean (Callan McAuliffe), his arch nemesis a former teacher Robin Smythe (Ben Kingsley) who now works for the robots.
Smythe has a clear and less than honourable interest in Sean’s mother Kate (Gillian Anderson), which has allowed punishment of the group to be much slacker than it should have been.
His patience is starting to wear thin as they continue to break the rules.
A wonderfully dark sci-fi story with oodles of snappy humour and thankfully teens talking like teens and sir Ben Kingsley finally explaining what chav means :) "You know what 'chav' stands for? Council house and violent."
Cracking robot romp suitable for all the family, I really enjoyed this movie from start to finish, it may be aimed primarily at the young teen market but I'm 45 and thought it was brilliant.
The CGI etc. stands miles above where it should be when you take the relatively low budget behind the movie into consideration, the robots all look fantastic in it.
I found it very refreshing seeing giant robots clunking through a British seaside town rather than usual predictable American city.
The robot Mediator is a very effectively creepy villain, just looking at him without even hearing him speak gave me a real creepy feeling, almost human but not quite right!
The character Nate (James Tarpey) is very much so the comedy element of the show, with numerous comedy gold moments to make you giggle.
All in all very much so the feeling of a 70s or 80s adventure/sci fi movie with up to take effects and CGI, Simply brilliant to see Britain finally taking on Hollywood at this sort of thing, when was the last time a British movie attempted something this spectacular in the world of Sci-Fi?
And did I mention there's a SPITFIRE in it? :) Enjoy!
