Welcome to the winter solstice 2012

This day is the shortest day of the year.
Officially the first day of winter, the winter solstice occurs when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun. This is the longest night of the year, meaning that despite the cold winter, the days get progressively longer after the winter solstice until the summer solstice in 2013.

The world won’t end on December 21, but the 2012 winter solstice is still on the astronomical calendar.
We’ll all know the outcome in less than 12 hours, when the clock strikes midnight on 12/21/2012, at least in the Eastern Time Zone. (FYI: It’s already 12/21/12 on the other side of the world, and everything is still spinning)

The sun takes its shortest and lowest path across the sky today.
The sun rises and sets at its southernmost points along the horizon today.
From this point on the pendulum swings in the other direction and the days will start to get longer...
If you are at Stonehenge you will see its sight~line is aligned to todays sunrise and sunset.
The Earth and sun align with the center of the Milky Way Galaxy each December, but that’s an annual event of no consequence.

Psalm 118:24
This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
