Super Solar Flare Preparation

National Space Weather Strategy and the National Space Weather Action Plan, was written in anticipation of large-scale disruptions from a solar flare or similar event:  

Released on October 28, 2015, the White House plan involves the coordination of agencies from the federal level, state level, and including emergency managers, academia, the media, the insurance industry, nonprofit organizations and the private sector, all in preparation for the worst-case scenario possible, such as the Carrington Event that took place in 1859.

 Meanwhile a long filament erupted on the Sun on April 28, 2015 NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured imagery of the filament that snaked across a huge area on the Sun.

EXPLOSION ON THE SUN:

For days, astronomers have been monitoring a large filament of magnetism stretching across the face of the sun.

 This morning, April 28th, it erupted.

Fragments of the filament flew away from the Sun, creating a "canyon of fire" in the sun's atmosphere and hurling a bright CME into space.
